Josef Slunge
When Josef Slunge made his album debut in 2023 with “ikväll, inatt, men aldrig imorgon”, he instantly established himself as one of the most exciting names on the Swedish music scene, seamlessly blending genres and expressions with playful ease. The response was immediate: P3, Aftonbladet, Nöjesguiden, Göteborgs-Posten, and Gaffa were among the first to join the chorus of praise. Slunge capped off the year with his first headlining tour, a celebrated guest performance at Way Out West with Cleo, and by being awarded the Creative Juice Grant of the Year.
Slunge began releasing music under his own name as early as 2019, but on his debut album, his previous hip-hop influences became just one of many elements in a mix of musical perspectives. In doing so, he has, almost unintentionally, become more in tune with the zeitgeist than ever before. “There’s a fragility in the songs that can only come from someone who dares to be vulnerable with themselves and their audience,” wrote one rapturous critic.
For Slunge, moving forward is fundamental. It’s no surprise, then, that his upcoming mixtape – “I Love You” – ventures into completely new territory compared to the album. Here, he returns, in constant collaboration with producer Matteus Jording, to pay homage to the hip-hop roots where his musical journey began. The songs are constructed entirely through sampling, with every audible tone borrowed from somewhere else—whether it’s a tiny sound effect, a snare, or something more elaborate. By the time the project was complete, over 500 samples had been used.
The mixtape “I Love You” will be released in full later this spring, but the first taste, the single “Skrikandes trumpeter” (about being young and a bit lost in Gothenburg), dropped in February.
